Caravan Jockey Wheel Sizes & Dimensions Guide
Caravan jockey wheels come in 3 main sizes: 6 inch (150mm), 8 inch (200mm) and 10 inch (about 250mm). Load ratings across our jockey wheels and stands run from 350kg up to 1,000kg, so choose one rated above your van's loaded ball weight.
Wheel size is only half the story. You also need the right clamp or bracket for your drawbar, a tube that fits your clamp, and enough height to lift the coupling off the tow ball.
Caravan jockey wheel size chart
This table compares the jockey wheel sizes we stock. Load ratings are static ratings, which means the weight the unit can hold while parked.
| Wheel size | Wheel diameter | Static load range | Typical lift | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 inch | 150mm | 400 to 500kg | 225mm | Camper trailers, small vans, box and boat trailers |
| 8 inch | 200mm | 350 to 850kg | 225 to 250mm | Most single and tandem axle caravans |
| 10 inch | About 250mm (4.10/3.50 x 4 tyre) | 400 to 1,000kg | 225mm | Heavier vans and parking on grass or gravel |
| Twin 8 inch off road | 2 x 200mm | 500 or 750kg | 250mm at each of 4 heights | Off road vans and camper trailers |
6 inch jockey wheel sizes and dimensions
A 6 inch jockey wheel has a 150mm wheel, usually 50mm wide. It is the smallest size and suits light loads on hard, flat ground like a concrete driveway.
Models in our range are rated to 400kg or 500kg, with about 225mm of lift. A typical unit stands around 520mm tall and weighs about 6.5kg.

8 inch jockey wheel sizes and dimensions
An 8 inch jockey wheel has a 200mm wheel and is the size we stock the most models in. It gives a good balance of rolling ease, height and load rating for most caravans.
Light duty 8 inch (350 to 400kg)
These suit lighter vans and camper trailers. Many are swing up models that fold flat for towing.
Medium duty 8 inch (500 to 700kg)
This is the most common choice for family caravans. A typical 700kg unit has 225mm of lift, stands about 570mm tall and weighs around 7kg.
Heavy duty 8 inch (680 to 850kg)
These suit bigger vans with a heavy ball weight. Look for a solid rubber wheel with roller bearings, which rolls more easily under load.
Extra height 8 inch
Extra height models have a longer tube for high couplings or sloping driveways. One model in our range reaches from 370mm to 767mm between the ground and the centre of the drawbar.

10 inch jockey wheel sizes and dimensions
A 10 inch jockey wheel uses a 4.10/3.50 x 4 tyre, which is about 250mm tall. The larger wheel is easier to push across grass, dirt and gravel.
Single wheel models in our range are rated from 400kg to 850kg. They typically have 225mm of lift, stand about 630mm tall and weigh 10kg to 11kg.
Twin 10 inch models put two wheels side by side to spread the load. Our heavy duty twin model weighs 17kg and is rated to 1,000kg, the highest rating in our manual range.

Off road and twin wheel jockey wheels
Off road jockey wheels use two 8 inch wheels with sealed bearings and an off road tread. Twin wheels spread the load, which helps stop the wheel sinking into soft ground.
They come in 500kg and 750kg ratings, with 4 height positions and 250mm of adjustment at each. The clamps suit 75mm, 100mm, 130mm and 150mm drawbars.
The yoke locks in different positions when stowed, so it clears stone guards, toolboxes and jerry can holders. Shop the range of off road jockey wheels.
Heavy van or tight space? A motorised jockey wheel moves the van for you by remote. Models in our range handle caravans up to 3,500kg, and all terrain movers go up to 4,500kg.
Jockey wheel fit and compatibility
Load rating and ball weight
Your jockey wheel holds up the front of the van, so its rating must be higher than your ball weight. Ball weight is the downward force the coupling puts on the tow ball, not the total weight of the van.
A common rule of thumb is a ball weight of about 10% of the van's loaded weight [CONFIRM]. The safest way to know is to weigh it with a tow ball scale when the van is packed for a trip.
Tube diameter and clamp size
The tube is the round outer body of the jockey wheel, and it must match the clamp that holds it. Common sizes are 48mm, 50mm and 60mm, so measure yours before buying a new clamp.
A clamp that is too big lets the tube slip. Browse jockey wheel clamps to find one that matches your tube and drawbar.
Replacing like for like
If you are swapping a worn jockey wheel, the easiest path is often the same brand already on your van. This helps the new unit fit your existing clamp or bracket.
We carry full AL-KO jockey wheels and Manutec jockey wheels ranges. AL-KO jockey wheels use a 48mm tube, so check the clamp size before mixing brands.
Clamp, swivel bracket or bolt on
A clamp lets you slide the jockey wheel up and down or remove it. A swivel bracket, also called swing up, folds the wheel up flat for towing and usually fixes with U-bolts or bolts through the drawbar.
Check your drawbar height and width before buying a bracket. Mounting kits in our range suit drawbars from 75mm to 150mm high.
Height and lift
Lift is how far the wheel winds up or down, and most units in our range give 225mm to 250mm. If your coupling sits high or you park on a slope, an extra height model gives you more room to work.
Side wind or top wind
A top wind handle sits on top of the tube. A side wind handle sits on the side, which is handy when a stone guard, gas bottles or a toolbox are in the way.
Jockey wheel bases and accessories
A Jockey Wheel Buddy is a base plate your jockey wheel sits on. It stops the wheel sinking into grass, sand or soft dirt when the van is parked.
Bases are sized to match your wheel, with 150mm, 200mm and 250mm versions for 6, 8 and 10 inch wheels. Cut out versions let the wheel still roll and pivot, while solid bases give the most support.

How to measure for a caravan jockey wheel
- Weigh your ball weight with the van loaded for travel, then pick a rating above it.
- Measure the outside diameter of your current jockey wheel tube with a vernier or tape.
- Measure your drawbar height and width where the clamp or bracket will sit.
- Measure from the ground to the centre of the drawbar with the van level and hitched.
- Check the space around the mounting point for stone guards, toolboxes, jerry cans and gas bottles.
- Think about where you park most, whether that is concrete, grass, gravel or sand.

Caravan jockey wheel FAQs
What size jockey wheel do I need for my caravan?
Most caravans suit an 8 inch jockey wheel rated above the van's loaded ball weight. Choose a 10 inch or twin wheel model if your van is heavy or you often park on grass or gravel.
Are jockey wheel clamps a standard size?
No, they vary. Common tube sizes are 48mm, 50mm and 60mm, so match the clamp to your tube.
What load rating should my jockey wheel have?
Pick a rating higher than your ball weight when the van is fully loaded. Weigh your ball weight with a tow ball scale rather than guessing.
Is a bigger jockey wheel better?
A bigger wheel rolls more easily over soft or rough ground. It is also taller, so check you have room to stow it on your drawbar.
How do I stop my jockey wheel sinking into the ground?
Use a base plate sized to your wheel, or a twin wheel model that spreads the load. Base plates come in sizes for 6, 8 and 10 inch wheels.
What is the difference between a jockey wheel and a stand?
A jockey wheel rolls, so you can move the van by hand. An adjustable stand does not roll but gives firm support at a set height, with some models adjusting from 690mm to 915mm.
