Once the battery hits that level, the internal Battery Management System (BMS) kicks in to protect the battery from damage.
For instance, a 100-amp lithium battery will give you around 80 amps of usable power before it turns off to prevent over-discharge. This makes lithium batteries incredibly efficient, allowing you to get more energy from a smaller, lighter battery.
Versatile Sizes: Lithium batteries come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 100 amps to 200 amps, with intermediate options like 120 or 150 amps. If you need even more energy, lithium batteries can be wired in parallel to provide up to 400 amps or more.

AGM (Lead-Acid) Batteries Features
Different Operating Mechanism: Lead-acid batteries, particularly AGM, operate differently from lithium batteries. Available in sizes from as small as 7 amps to as large as 200 amps, AGM batteries require careful monitoring by the user. Unlike lithium batteries, AGM models don’t have a BMS, which means you have to make sure they don’t drop below 70% of their capacity. Allowing the battery to discharge beyond this point can damage the cells, reducing the overall lifespan.
For example, if your lead-acid battery charges up to 13.8 volts, you should recharge it once it hits around 11.9 volts. Using the battery beyond this point will start to cause permanent damage. While AGM batteries will continue to provide power until they reach 0 volts, this will permanently harm the cells well before they hit that point.
Charging Considerations: Unlike lithium batteries, AGM batteries must be charged at a rate that does not exceed 20% of their capacity. For example, a 100-amp AGM battery should not be charged at a rate higher than 20 amps. Charging too quickly can cause the cells to overheat and expand, potentially damaging the battery and reducing its lifespan.
Heavier and Bulkier: Another downside of AGM batteries is their weight. A 100-amp AGM battery weighs around 30 kilograms, making it much heavier than its lithium counterpart. If you’re using multiple lead-acid batteries to increase your power capacity, the weight can quickly add up, which may not be ideal for your caravan’s weight limit.
Which Is The Best Caravan Battery To Choose?
Both lithium and AGM batteries have their place in the world of low-voltage DC power systems, but for modern caravans and off-grid setups, lithium batteries tend to be the superior option. Here’s why:
