Best Caravan Towing Mirrors

When it comes to towing a caravan, safety is key, and having the right equipment makes all the difference. One essential tool for a smooth and secure towing experience is a good set of caravan towing mirrors. These mirrors not only extend your field of vision but also ensure you're fully aware of your surroundings on the road. In this blog, we’ll explore why towing mirrors are a must-have, how to choose the right ones, and some of the best options available for caravanners.

But first, let’s look into the legal regulations.

Are there any legal rules regarding towing mirrors that you need to follow in Australia?

Yes, there are rules in place when towing a caravan or trailer in Australia. Basically, the towing mirrors need to be securely mounted and adjustable, and give you a clear and stable view of the road behind. More specifically, according to the Australian Design Rule (ADR 14/02), the mirrors must give you a clear, unobstructed view down the sides of your caravan, covering at least a 4-metre-wide section of the road starting 20 metres behind the drivers’ seat. You should also be able to see a 1-metre wide section of road, starting 4 metres behind the driver’s seat. This makes sure you can see if anything is right behind you and close to the car. With these settings, you cover the triangular area that your car’s standard mirrors can’t see but your towing mirrors can. We’ll advise you on how to adjust your mirrors later in this article.

Also, the mirrors can stick out up to 150 mm past the widest part of your caravan (or up to 230 mm if they are foldable, but must fold in to 150 mm or less). When you are not towing, make sure to fold in or remove the mirrors so they don’t stick out too far, as you can be fined for driving your car with mirrors that exceed the width limits.

These are the general rules across Australia, but each state and territory may have additional regulations. You can check with your official state transport authority for specific details.

How about a rear-view camera to replace the mirrors?

Whilst a rear view camera can be very helpful, you still legally need towing mirrors and cannot use a camera as a replacement.

Which towing mirror should I choose?

Whether you tow frequently or just occasionally, there will be a mirror that will suit your setup perfectly. Here’s a closer look at the two most popular types to help you choose the best fit.

Clip- or Strap-On Towing Mirrors

As the name suggests, these mirrors attach to your vehicle’s existing side mirrors using clips or straps. This makes them quick and easy to install and a good and reliable option if you don’t tow that often. They are an affordable and secure fit for those looking for a convenient solution without modifying their vehicle permanently. Additionally, they are lightweight and easy to store when not in use, making it a very practical choice for occasional towing.

Extendable/Replacement Towing Mirrors

Extendable towing mirrors (also known as telescopic mirrors or replacement mirrors) are designed to allow a wider field of view which makes manoeuvring your caravan easier and safer. You can adjust the mirrors in length and retract them back to a standard length when not towing. They are usually built-in or custom-fit to your vehicle, offering a stable and permanent solution for those who plan on doing regular or longer trips or are hitting the road permanently. Since extendable mirrors are usually built to be a permanent fixture, they are often constructed with very durable materials. They often come with additional integrated features like turn signals, heating elements and power adjustments.

How to properly install your Towing Mirrors

Towing mirrors can be installed in a variety of ways depending on their type. The clip-on mirrors can be simply attached by sliding the mirror into place and making sure it is held steady by the clips or straps. For extendable/replacement towing mirrors, you will typically need a socket wrench or screwdriver, depending on the mounting method of your towing mirrors. Carefully remove the existing mirrors and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the new mirrors. At Carac, we offer professional towing mirror installations in our workshop to ensure they are fitted correctly and safely for your next adventure.

How to adjust them:

Even the best towing mirrors can’t do their job if they’re not properly aligned. To make sure if your extended mirrors provide the right view from the driver’s seat, follow these steps:

  1. Sit in the driver’s seat and adjust your seating position to how you normally drive. Make sure you can reach and adjust the mirrors.
  2. Have a friend stand 20 metres behind the driver’s seat, aligned with the side of the caravan. You should be able to see them standing there. Then ask them to walk 4 metres outward on each side. This ensures that you can see the full width of 4 metres on both sides, 20 metres behind the caravan.
  3. Make sure that both mirrors cover this view. Check the mirrors for any blind spots and make adjustments as needed. Make sure you can see both the long-distance area (20 metres back, 4 metres wide) and the closer section directly besides your car (4 metres behind the driver seat, 1 metre wide).

Strong winds, uneven surfaces, and changing conditions can cause your mirrors to shift out of place. Before every trip, check the stability of the mirrors by gently shaking them to ensure they are securely attached. If they move too much or seem loose, retighten the fittings. Make it a habit to check and adjust them regularly to maintain optimal visibility.

Keeping your Tow Mirrors in tip top condition

Maintaining and cleaning tow mirrors is crucial for ensuring safety of both the driver and other road users.

  1. Clean your mirrors regularly. Dust, road grime and insects can easily build up on them, reducing visibility.
  2. Check regularly for any cracks, scratches, or damage that could impair visibility. Also inspect the brackets, clamps and straps for wear and tear and replace them if needed.
  3. Check and tighten any loose screws or bolts.
  4. Lubricate moving parts. If your towing mirrors have adjustable arms, lubricate any moving parts periodically to prevent rust and corrosion and ensure smooth adjustments. Use a high quality lubricant.
  5. When not in use, consider covering your mirrors and store your clip-on mirrors in a dry, protected area to prevent damage from the elements.

By following these steps you can keep your tow mirrors in optimal condition, providing clear visibility during all your future caravan towing adventures.
