A large skylight has about five times the cut-out area of a standard vent hatch. That's why it needs a flat section of roof and a bigger hole, not just a bigger lid.

1. Standard Vent Hatch (355mm x 355mm / 14" x 14")

Standard vent hatches are the most common roof fitting on Australian caravans. The classic size is 14 inches by 14 inches, which equals 355mm by 355mm.

They suit kitchens, bathrooms and living areas where you just need airflow, not extra light.

Most are made from tough, UV-resistant plastic with an acrylic lid. You can get a manual wind-up vent, or one with a 12V fan for faster airflow.

Older Ventline and Jensen hatches use the same 355mm cut-out, but a different clip system to newer hatches like the Ozvent range. Always check which style you're replacing before you order.

2. Mini Skylight (400mm x 400mm)

A mini skylight is a step up from a standard vent hatch. It brings in natural light as well as airflow.

The most common mini skylight cut-out size in Australia is 400mm by 400mm.

These are usually double glazed acrylic domes with a flyscreen and a block-out blind built in. They're sold in two versions to suit different roof thicknesses.

3. Mid-Size Skylight (660mm x 660mm to 700mm x 500mm)

A mid-size skylight makes a kitchen or living area noticeably brighter and airier than a mini skylight. Two cut-out shapes are common in Australia: a 660mm square, and a 700mm x 500mm rectangle.

The Camec Four Seasons Evolution uses the 660mm x 660mm square cut-out and has four flaps you can open separately. The Dometic Midi Heki uses the 700mm x 500mm rectangular cut-out, with a 785mm x 575mm internal frame.

Each flap on the Four Seasons Evolution can be set to locked, rain-protection, or fully open. That gives you more control than a single-dome skylight.

The Midi Heki's internal frame size, 785mm x 575mm, is the easiest way to identify it if the model name has worn off over the years, since the same lid is shared across several Midi Heki versions.

4. Large Skylight (960mm x 655mm)

A large skylight is the biggest single roof opening commonly fitted to Australian caravans. It suits a large kitchen, dinette or living area.

The Dometic Heki2 is the benchmark model, with a 960mm x 655mm cut-out. It needs a flat section of roof, since even a small curve under a straight edge can stop it sealing.

How to Measure Your Roof Hatch Cut-Out
