Caravan Safety Guide: Ensuring a Secure Journey
Traveling in a caravan can be a fantastic way to explore the great outdoors, offering freedom and flexibility. However, it also comes with unique safety challenges. Whether you're a seasoned traveller or new to caravanning, understanding and implementing simple safety measures is crucial for a worry-free experience. Here’s a guide to ensure your caravan adventures are both enjoyable and safe.
Vehicle Inspection
Before you hit the road, conduct a thorough inspection of your caravan. Check the following:
- Tyres: Tyres are the most critical part of any caravan or trailer in that without tyres, they don’t move. Tyres are subject to incredible stresses throughout their lifespan and do require regular inspection and maintenance to ensure they work as efficiently as possible every time. Caravans and trailers generally travel less distances than the cars towing them and sometimes tyres are a forgotten maintenance item. Tyre pressure is critical to ensuring the maximum amount of tread is in contact with the road. Too much pressure and the tyres will bloat, too little and the tread will sink in the centre. Either of these conditions will also wear out the tyres prematurely. At Carac, we sell a range of Tyre Accessories, including Tyre Pressure Monitor Systems. Tyres also degrade over time and are warranted for up to 5 years and deemed due for replacement after 10 years regardless of tread wear. It is easy to check the date stamp on tyres with an example below:
- Wheel nuts: A simple yet critical check is to ensure all wheel nuts are tightened to manufacturer recommendations. It is also best practice to regularly check your wheel nuts during your journey to ensure they remain tight. The iCheckTPMS wheel nut indicators offer a quick and easy way of checking to see if you have any loose wheel nuts. Our wheel nut indicators suit 19mm nuts and only take minutes to install.
- Lights: Check that all exterior lights indicators, brake lights, and clearance lights are functioning properly. Ensure your trailer plug and socket are clean and free from debris which can cause poor connection and introduce light flickering or electric braking system errors.
- Hitching: Ensure the caravan is securely attached to the towing vehicle and that the correct rated safety chains are connected using approved connecting methods.
- Brakes: Your braking system is there to assist in slowing the vehicle and caravan or trailer together as a whole. It is also used as a method of correcting loss-of-control situations such as caravan sway and emergency braking. Electric braking systems include the use of a brake controller to apply the correct amount of braking force for every situation, whether stopping at traffic lights or allowing manual override braking to assist in stabilising a swaying or out-of-control caravan. Most brake controllers will operate with minimal input from the driver and will alert you to any error that may be within the electric braking system. The simple way to check your electric brakes are operating is to drive at a low speed and activate your manual override on the brake controller just for a few seconds. This is best done after the brakes have warmed up a little, for example, on your way to the servo to check your tyre pressures.
Emergency Equipment
If in the event you are in an emergency, these essentials are a must. Always carry essential emergency equipment, including:
- First aid kit (follow expiry dates on kits)
- Fire extinguisher (check its expiry date)
- Spare tyre and tools for changing a tyre
- Tyre repair kit
- Reflective triangles or beacon
- Basic toolkit for minor repairs

In conclusion, ensuring a safe journey in your caravan requires proactive measures and thoughtful preparation. By conducting these pre-journey vehicle inspections, particularly focusing on tyre condition, wheel nuts, lights, hitching, and braking systems, you can significantly enhance your safety on the road. Additionally, being equipped with essential emergency supplies—like a first aid kit and fire extinguisher—will prepare you for unforeseen circumstances.
Whether you're a novice or an experienced caravanner, prioritising safety not only protects you and your passengers but also allows you to fully enjoy the freedom of the open road. With these guidelines in mind, you can go on your adventures with confidence, knowing you're well-prepared for a safe and enjoyable journey.
